05 lessons I’ve learned about fashion after 03 years of working in this industry

Updated: Dec 17, 2022

I’ve been working in Fashion since I graduated from university. I had never thought I would work in this industry because I had no sense of Fashion. In the past, I felt that Fashion is just some clothes we wear and that’s it—nothing more, nothing less. But, when I decided to work in Ecommerce, I started selling casual clothes by chance. That was how I stepped to immerse myself in the fashion world.

I’ve sold casual clothes, activewear, sneakers, underwear, and jewelry for three years. That’s why I force myself to learn more about this stuff. So, I start following fashion icons such as BLACKPINK, G-Dragon, and Princess Diana to learn from them. Naturally, Fashion now becomes one of my favorite things to read, listen and discover. And here is 05 things I’ve learned about Fashion in my journey.

1, The most crucial mission of Fashion is to tell our personality

We are young and would love to show ourselves to the world. Some people choose to have a tattoo; others build a Youtube Channel to show their thoughts and personality. These ways are good. But there is another way: building a wardrobe that shows our nature. And I personally think that is the biggest mission of Fashion. For instance, I like to wear something comfortable such as jeans, sneakers, sweaters, etc, because I want to show that I’m a dynamic and active girl.

2, It’s not about expensive clothes; it’s about our bodies and beauty

Sometimes, I spend many hours watching BLACKPINK at the airport. I do that to analyze what they wear and their styles. And I just realized that they look outstanding even though they just wear blue jeans and white t-shirts. I ask myself why and I find out the answer. It’s not about the luxury clothes, but their fit bodies, their white skin, their fashionable hairstyle, and they bring positive energy to the table. Because they are so beautiful, they just need to wear something essential, and it’s enough to make them look amazing. That’s why we should learn from them. Setting a goal of being beautiful is our priority, not expensive clothes. (Jennie sometimes wears 15$ jeans, but she still looks great).

3, Understanding the fundamentals of Fashion

I always approach everything by following the fundamentals and have the same approach to Fashion. Fashion has three key things: Shape, Color, and Materials. We choose the form that fits us, the color that matches our skin tone, and the materials that make us feel comfortable. When I pick up my clothes, I think about these points, and it helps me choose the outfits that suit me most.

4, We need to have a fashion icon as a role model

I’ve learned about Fashion as I learn about graphic design. The rule is to “copy, paste, adjust, and make it my own”. I have my role models, they are BLACKPINK members, especially Jennie. And I watch how Princess Diana dressed in the past. I don’t say that I will buy Chanel like Jennie or Princess Diana because I can’t afford that. I will observe how she dresses, how she mixes her items, and her fashion spirit. These are what I learn, and my role models inspire me to dress up.

5, Dress up!

Start dressing up; we will have a better sense of fashion day by day. I think it’s a long-term process to upgrade our style. I start with some affordable and basic items that make me confident and comfortable when wearing them—seeking some feedback if we have someone having a good fashion style by our side. It will benefit us to build up our style in the long run.

There are many controversial about the fashion industry nowadays, but I think we can’t cut off this industry because It’s an essential need of human beings. Instead, we should think about how to make this industry better. I value Fashion because It helps me show my personality and makes me more beautiful and confident. Because of that, I can spread positive energy to people around me.
