I’m a girl in the Ecommerce industry. Working in Ecommerce helps me learn so many things, but there are still some drawbacks to it. From my own experience, I want to tell you guys some of the dark sides when working as an Ecommerce executive or planner. People keep talking about how trendy the Ecommerce industry is, but I think having some more real opposite perspectives can help us shape the bigger picture.

1, It’s not a stable job

If you are looking for a stable job, I would say that working in Ecommerce industry may not be your good choice. There have been so many changes throughout the years in this industry. I’ve been working with Shopee, Lazada, and Tiki since 2019, and I’ve seen a clear difference every month. Moreover, the Ecommerce industry is new. It’s a lot of room to be improved and developed. That’s why the fast-changing feature will not stop now. In my view, we need to be open-minded to learn and upgrade ourselves every single day to survive.

2, Time-consuming

It’s not just a 9-5 job. Imagine that if you can buy things 24/7, seven days a week on Shopee, Lazada, and Tiki as a consumer. It proves that sometimes people in the Ecommerce industry have to work at night to maintain the consistency of your buying, especially during mega campaigns such as 9.9, 11.11, brand day, super brand day, etc. When talking about us, staying up until 2 AM on 9.9 is the usual story. It has a lot of tasks. It’s so hard sometimes, and we have to work overtime to complete the tasks. In my opinion, It’s not an easy job, and It will take you a lot of time to work on it.

3, Having pressure about target and KPI

Working as Ecommerce executives or planners, we are undoubtedly responsible for the revenue of the online stores. Sometimes, the KPI target is not realistic, but we have to handle it. It can make you feel very stressed so much time. In my opinion, working hard is not enough if we are in charge of the KPI of revenue. People sometimes don’t care about what we do. They care about our results. It’s sad, but It’s true. So, I think building a result-oriented mindset is needed to work on it. My boss said that “ you need to have some pressure to grow yourself,” It may be a positive side of having pressure.

4, The risk of price setting

We will face a terrible result when setting the wrong price, especially on mega sales. I’m going to tell you a prevailing situation. For example, the product’s price is 100,000 vnd, but you miss the number “0”, you set 10,000 vnd. And in just five minutes, with the power of mega sales in Ecommerce, you may sell 100 items at the wrong price. The result is that you lost 9,000,000 vnd, and you must pay the price for your mistakes. So, That’s why we have to be very careful when we do anything related to price.

5, The negative impact on the Environment

In my opinion, the Ecommerce industry brings us so many benefits of convenience, diversity of buying options, etc. But I’m so concerned about their negative impact on the Environment. I want to mention nylon packaging. To protect the products from loss or damage during transit, they use many nylon layers for packaging them. Some brands use paper boxes for packaging their products, but It costs them more money than using nylon. That’s why most brands use nylon as the primary packaging material. It will hurt the Environment for a long time. I hope we will have other friendly-environment solutions for packaging in the Ecommerce industry shortly.

In conclusion, the dark sides of the Ecommerce industry exist. When we have a clear picture of it, we will know how to react to it authentically. I hope that I can bring you some little information about this industry. As a person who works on it, I appreciate it, and I hope that more people will know about Ecommerce and give a hand to make it grow day by day.
